Built from a different point of view
In 2017, Sid Mabunda was searching for direction. Ideas about starting a business and working in advertising were often dismissed as confusion, but Sid kept looking for a way to turn his ideas into something meaningful. That search led him to David Ogilvy and the power of the big idea. In February 2018, he began studying the principles of scientific advertising and applied for a scholarship at the AAA School of Advertising. He was unsuccessful. Rather than seeing that rejection as the end of the road, it pushed him to question the rigid, rule-based approach to advertising he was being exposed to.
By June 2018, Sid had discovered Bill Bernbach and a very different philosophy. Bernbach’s approach treated advertising as something more human and creative, with no rigid set of rules for producing great work. It reinforced something Sid was beginning to understand: good advertising needed more than formulas. It needed ideas, creativity and a genuine understanding of people. Over the years that followed, his lack of traditional advertising credentials and agency experience began to look less like a disadvantage and more like an advantage. His thinking had not been cluttered by conventional advertising knowledge, and he had not picked up the bad habits of other agencies.
In 2024, Sid began developing a deeper understanding of strategy and how insights become direction. Through Julian Cole’s Strategy Finishing School, he explored insight intelligence and the way creative, strategy and account management work together to build effective campaigns. This helped shape the thinking behind what Sid+Man would become: a creatively led company where finding the right thing to say comes before deciding how to say it, and where strategic thinking and creativity work together rather than existing in separate worlds.
In 2025, Sid began bringing the right people around that vision. He approached Reginal Khoza, someone with whom he had spent years searching for direction and purpose, and shared his vision for the company. Having both worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance, they shared a belief in selling the product and driving market share, rather than simply solving consumer problems. Reginal holds a Diploma in Marketing and brought leadership experience from managing at DisChem, eventually taking responsibility for the day-to-day running of the business. Sid also connected with Michael Ngobeni, a qualified Chartered Accountant with experience at the City of Johannesburg. Their conversations around business, marketing and corporate finance led to a partnership built on trust, with Michael becoming the financial partner Sid wanted for agency billings and media buying while helping protect the long-term independence of the company.
On 1 June 2026, Sid+Man officially opened its doors. The agency was built around a simple belief: being different is not enough unless you can create something that matters. From the beginning, creativity was placed at the pinnacle of the organisation, with the ambition of creating a company where creative people lead, thinkers and doers are encouraged to bring their individuality to the work, and everyone has the opportunity to produce the best work of their lives. What began as one person’s search for direction became Sid+Man: an independent South African creative company built to find the one true thing about every brand and turn it into work that earns attention. The partnership was built around trust and a shared commitment to protecting the independence and principles of the agency.
